02 Dec PPA Heels on Wheels: Entries closed…

Entries for the PPA Heels on Wheels (all-female) funride closed with a wonderful field of some 500 ladies getting ready to take to the roads around Paarl and Stellenbosch on Sunday 8 December 2013. With a new venue and new routes, the PPA Heels on Wheels will be a first event for several participants . No late entries or substitutions will unfortunately be taken during the week, or at the event itself.

25 Nov Entries for PPA’s All-Female Funride are Closing Soon

Sunday 8 December is a special day on the cycling calendar: It is a day when the focus falls solely on female cyclists, with husbands, boyfriends and partners looking after the kids while the women take to the roads. The PPA’s ‘Heels on Wheels’ funride aims to demystify cycling for the average female cyclist, creating a friendly and doable event where the emphasis is primarily on getting to the finish line – and having heaps of fun along the way. The funride will start at 06h30 at the Simonsvlei Wine Estate near Paarl. Choose from one of three routes: a tough 53 km which includes the climb over Helshoogte; an undulating 38 km or an easy and relatively flat 22 km. Great lucky draw prizes include cycling clothing, various hampers and shopping vouchers.

Training will take place at Killarney this week on Tuesday 12 November. Training takes place from 18h00-19h00, with registration from 17h30. Cost: R15 for PPA members; R30 for non-members. Please read on for details about the new parking area.

27 Sep Declaration to the Ministery of Transport

Too many cyclists have died in the past year after being hit by a car, bus or taxi. Amongst them were Olympic cyclist Burry Stander, as well as numerous commuters and other cyclists. In the draft National Non-Motorised Transport Policy of 2008, South Africa’s National Department of Transport committed to getting more people to ride bicycles. Based on feedback from our members, one of the main reasons why more people do not ride bicycles on roads is because they are afraid of being injured or killed by a motorised vehicle. It’s as simple as that.

29 Aug Pedal Power Association launches the PPA Toyota ‘Ride for your Life South Africa’ Tour

(29 August 2013, Cape Town) The Pedal Power Association today announced the launch of the PPA Toyota ‘Ride for your Life South Africa’ Tour scheduled to take place in September in support of their ongoing safety campaign, ‘Cyclists Stay Alive at 1.5m’ which urges motorists to pass cyclists with a safe berth of 1.5m. A group of cyclists will embark on a three-week, three-stage cycling tour starting in Johannesburg on 8 September.  They will pedal their way through a number of towns and cities to arrive in Cape Town on 28 September 2013.

Entries for the 37^th annual Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour will open on Sunday 1 September 2013 at 1pm.  The Cycle Tour is recognised as the world's largest individually timed cycle race, annually attracting approximately 35000 cyclists from around the world to participate in this iconic event. “Thanks to our strong charity group entry focus, entry interest for 2014 is significantly higher than in previous years.  As a result, we’re anticipating individual entries selling out in record time this year,” said David Bellairs, Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust Director .
