14 Oct 2016 West Coast Express (16 Oct) has been cancelled
The Outriders Cycling Club, owners and organisers of the popular West Coast Express scheduled for this Sunday (16 October), have issued a notice cancelling the event:
“It is with huge regret and sadness that we have to announce the cancellation of The West Coast Express Funride this Sunday.
“Provincial Traffic and their appointed contractors working on the R27 have retracted permission to use the route due to the recently-expanded road works and in the interests of cyclists’ safety.
“This late notice comes as a complete shock and surprise. The cancellation was triggered as a result of the organising committee pro-actively meeting with the contractors to request assistance in making the road as wide and safe as possible. This discussion about safety and the road use at the event gave cause for the contractor to initiate cancellation proceedings late on Thursday 13 October. This was further strengthened by a motorist causing a truck to veer off the same road section due to impatience yesterday.
“We cannot apologise enough and assure you that every last avenue was looked at. Numerous senior officials were contacted, and all safe options were considered.
“Cyclists who have pre-entered will be refunded by Racetec directly and any late entries or EFT’s into the club’s account will be refunded by the club. Please let as many fellow cyclists know as you can.”

NOTE: The Pedal Power Association is very disappointed that the event was cancelled and was looking forward to the first league event. We have, however, earmarked a date in January for a potential new league event and will forward information soonest.
