10 Jan 2014 Shock as two cyclists are killed in Worcester
The Pedal Power Association is shocked and saddened at the death of two cyclists in Worcester on Thursday 9 January 2014. The two female cyclists were killed after being run over by a truck.
Madaleine van der Merwe and Mariana Steyl were training on their tandem for the 2014 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.
“Their death could have been prevented if the new Western Cape regulations pertaining to cyclists’ s safety were followed,” said PPA chairman Steve Hayward. According to the new legislation, vehicles must maintain a minimum distance of 1m when passing cyclists.
“We will continue to fight for the rights of cyclists and their continued safety on the roads,” Hayward said.
