SAFE CYCLING START GROUP APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR THE 2023 CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR

SAFE CYCLING START GROUP APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR THE 2023 CAPE TOWN CYCLE TOUR

The Pedal Power Association has supported cyclists in South Africa for over 40 years. As one of the largest cycling organisations in South Africa, we uphold the rights of cyclists and the vision of a ‘cycling South Africa’ where the safety and security of cyclists in all communities are ensured.
Cycling has an important role to play in the health and well-being of individuals and our society. As a clean and green form of transport for commuters, sports, and leisure riders it makes an essential contribution to the quality of life.

The Safe Cycling STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER campaign encourages all road users to practice tolerance, respect each other and ultimately be safer on the roads. PPA was part of the very successful ‘Cyclists Stay Alive at 1.5’ campaign back in 2011 which resulted in the Western Cape Government promulgating the law requiring vehicles to pass cyclists with a space of at least 1 meter in 2013.

The STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER campaign was launched in 2014 to raise motorists’ awareness of the law and ensure that they pass cyclists safely. Statistics indicate that almost all cycling fatalities on our roads are caused when a vehicle hits a cyclist from behind or when a driver underestimates the speed of an approaching cyclist and turns in front of her or him. Cyclists are extremely vulnerable and have almost no protection when involved in a collision, so by giving them enough space on the roads, motorists can avoid accidents that often result in serious injuries or fatalities.

Pledge your support for our campaign and apply for this year’s STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER start group.

We have been allocated a LIMITED NUMBER OF SPOTS for the 2023 Cape Town Cycle Tour. The group is seeded to start directly after the top groups (7h45 to 8h30) – We will confirm the exact time.
