14 Nov 2012 2012 Coronation Double Century – proceeding as planned
The 2012 Coronation Double Century, scheduled to take place in Swellendam on Saturday 24 November, will proceed as planned.
An urgent high level meeting was held Wednesday morning between event organisers, the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust and senior officials representing The South African Police Services, Provincial Disaster Management, Provincial Traffic Services, Provincial Community Safety and Provincial Emergency Medical Services. The outcome of the meeting was that, based on the current situation and all information to hand, the 2012 edition of the Coronation Double Century will proceed.
“We have received tremendous support from the Provincial Government of the Western Cape and the South African Police Services over the last few weeks of uncertainty,” explains David Bellairs, Marketing and Sponsorship Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. “We would like to thank our ever patient sponsors, Coronation Fund Managers, for their vote of confidence, as this year has presented the organising team with a number of significant challenges, resulting in necessary changes to the event. We believe that these changes, while in some instances not ideal, are simply in place to ensure that riders will continue to enjoy a safe and pleasurable event.”
He adds that the safety of participating cyclists is a high priority for them. “We encourage participants to take heed of the necessary changes which include the compulsory portage around the damaged road on the R60. We are extremely grateful to the Provincial Department of Transport and Public Works and the contractors Vela VKE Civil Engineers for their assistance in creating this portage option.”
For event-related queries, please contact the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust Events Office on (021) 681 4333 during office hours.
All teams travelling to Swellendam are encouraged to avoid the road between Ashton and Swellendam as the closure of the R60 will result in lengthy detours.
