PPA Women’s Cycling Workshop at Cape Storm
This one’s for the girls: Join us for a women’s cycling workshop at Cape Storm, Wynberg, on Thursday 10 February 2011. The focus will be on beginner / novice female cyclists. Special discounts on clothing for PPA members from 18h00 – 18h45; followed by presentations and panel discussion. Topics include training, nutrition and weight loss, and general female-related cycling and equipment-related tips. Read more in the news section on the PPA website.
Official Launch of West Coast Cycle Path
PPA members are invited to attend the official launch of the new West Coast cycle path built by the City of Cape Town, on Tuesday 1 February 2011. Meet at 06h30 at Woodbridge Island to leave at 06h45. Come and cycle a section of the new path on the morning, or use this opportunity to cycle to work if you live out Blouberg way and work in town! More info and details will be uploaded to the PPA news section on www.pedalpower.org.za tomorrow.
Following Vehicles at Events
At recent funrides, we again noticed some vehicles following cyclists along the route. Actions like these negatively influence getting traffic permission for funrides as well as traffic flow on the day – please ask your friends to wait for you at the venue.
Disqualifications at PPA Funrides
During January, 7 cyclists were disqualified for taking shortcuts yet still crossing the timing mats (Funride rule #13), while there have not as yet been disqualifications of cyclists crossing the white line or starting ahead of their seeded funride groups.
Seeded Numbers at Events
Remember to take your PPA seeded number to all events on the PPA calendar, as this will give you entry to your seeded start group. If you forget your seeded number at home, you have two options: (a) Buy a seeded number, valid for one day, at the PPA Mobile Office, at a cost of R30, or (b) Buy an unseeded number, valid for the day, from the event’s registration tables, at a cost of R5. You cannot use a temp unseeded event number to start in the seeded groups – the numbers look different to the temp seeded numbers, and the marshals will request you to start with the unseeded groups if you use a temp event number on the day.
Tuesday Cycle Training at Killarney
Join us on Tuesdays for cycling training sessions on the Killarney Motor Racing track (18h00-19h00). Registration from 17h30. NB: Please bring and show your PPA membership card in order to qualify for the discounted PPA fee. R15.00 (PPA members); R30 (non-members).
MTB Beginners Workshop
Join PPA for a beginners MTB workshop on Sunday 6 Feb. More information will be uploaded to the news section on the website later this week.

Route Description
ROAD: The 126 km route follows a loop towards Malmesbury. Cyclists will pedal past Wellington, Hermon and Riebeeck-Kasteel. Climb over Botmaskop and turn left towards Paarl on the R45. Turn right onto the Sonop / Kilpheuwel road, left onto Voor-Paardeberg and right at the Windmeul Winery onto the R44. The route then turns left onto the Suid-Agerpaarl road past Fairview and left onto the R45 /R101 to finish at the Paarl Boys High sports grounds.
The 72 km route cuts out the Hermon loop and turns left off the R45 onto the Sonop / Klipheuwel road to follow the 126 km route home. The 40 km route goes around Paarl Mountain and has no serious climbs. It meets up with the other routes near the Windmeul Winery. PLEASE NOTE: A compulsory cut-off will be enforced at the second waterpoint just after the prison on the Agter Paardeberg road on the 126 km route, approximately 90 km into the ride at 11h30.
With no road closure, cyclists must stay left of the median, and respect and obey traffic signs, officials, registration officials and marshals at all times. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
MTB: Both long and short MTB (off-road) routes start with a tough 8 km climb before following routes below Paarl Rock and through the Nature reserve. Both routes then go down to the R101 and turn left to the finish.
Directions to Venue
Take Exit 55 from the N1 (R45 / Paarl / Main Road). Turn left (if coming from Cape Town). Follow the Main Road beyond the Boulevard turn-off to the Paarl Boys High School and follow the “parking” signs. Alternatively take Exit 59 (R303 / Jan Van Riebeeck Drive), turn left and left again at the first circle to drive over the Berg River Bridge. Turn left at the circle and proceed towards the school’s sports grounds.
