PEDAL POWER ASSOCIATION GEARS UP FOR TRANSPORT MONTH ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA

PEDAL POWER ASSOCIATION GEARS UP FOR TRANSPORT MONTH ACROSS SOUTH AFRICA

The Pedal Power Association, South Africa’s largest membership based cycling organisation, is gearing up to partner with road safety role players in Cape Town, Gauteng and Durban for #Transportmonth2025, to advance the country’s road safety initiatives, while also creating awareness of the economic and health benefits of the sector.

“The PPA is proud to announce that we have partnered with the City of Cape Town, Cradle of Humankind, City of Joburg as well as eThekwini Municipality, to focus on non-motorised mobility activities that are taking place to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists but more importantly, the role that all road users play in keeping cyclists, pedestrians and runners safe on our roads,” explains CEO of the PPA, Neil Robinson. “A huge thank you to the Road Accident Fund for providing the reflective bibs and lights which we hand out to cyclists to keep them visible on the roads.”

The month kicked off on the 1st of October with the launch of #Transportmonth 2025 in Cape Town in partnership with the City of Cape Town, where a group of learners from local schools were given the opportunity to use the mini road track at the Mitchell’s Plein Learner Centre. Our Cool Kid on a Bike cycling safety  presentation, in partnership with the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN), introduced road safety to them in a fun way. “It is crucial to educate learners about road safety from a young age and we wish to thank the City of Cape Town for the opportunity,” Robinson said.

“On Wednesday 8 October, an awareness ride will be hosted from Khaltsha Cycles in Khayelitsha at 12h00, in partnership with the City of Cape Town focussing on cycling awareness in this township.

During October, the PPA is also planning handouts at busy intersections focussing on educating  motorists on the importance of giving cyclists space when passing and to avoid ‘dooring’ incidents. “As a cycling organisation, we also need to address the importance of cyclists obeying the rules of the road to create mutual respect on our roads.”

“Moving to Gauteng, the PPA has partnered with Nirox and  Avalanche to launch the PPA Phetoho Bike Patrollers  in the Cradle of Humankind on Saturday 18 October. The squad of ten bike patrollers on Avalanche MTB bikes, will focus on the safety of cyclists within the area and will set up a workshop at the Kromdraai Phetoho Community Facility in the Cradle. The team will be able to assist cyclists with mechanical issues and will be trained in basic first aid. The patrollers will also conduct guided tours for those visiting the area,” explains Robinson. Please feel free to join us on the 18th of October at 8h00 for a 20 km ride, we look forward to hosting you.

“The PPA is also partnering  with the City of Joburg to host our third safe cycling ride, on Sunday 19 October at Meridian High School in Cosmo City , at 7h00. The 20 km ride is open to everyone and it’s free. We will also be hosting a MTB challenge at the school for young riders, giving them the opportunity to compete for a fantastic overall prize, a new Avalanche MTB bike that we are donating.” says Robinson.

Creating a safe space for cycling ,is crucial to the PPA and it is for this reason that we partnered with Peschl Pro Sports Development and Cycle Lab to host the very first Cycle Sunday, a mass participation cycling safety event that will be hosted in Durban, on Sunday 26 October from 5h00 to 9h00, on the M4 Motorway from the Moses Mabhida Stadium to Umhlanga Rocks. “The M4 will be closed to traffic for this time period, giving cyclists from all walks of life, the opportunity to cycle on one of the most iconic routes in Durban, safely. There is a small fee of R50 but having the freedom to cycle up and down for a few hours on this stretch of road, is worth it,” Robinson explains. “ The PPA will do hourly Cool Kid road safety presentations to kids joining their parents on the day and one lucky participant will win an Avalanche DV8 BMX. We wish to thank the eThekwini Municipality and DBN Metro Police for allowing this unique opportunity in Durban to take place,” says Robinson.

“We are looking forward to a busy Transport Month and we wish to thank all our partners and stakeholders for their contribution to place the focus on cycling safety. We hope to see many of you out there on the road with us.” Robinson concluded.
