In his term he has been an active Exco member and has served on and chaired the House subcommittee responsible for locating and purchasing suitable offices to house the Association; served on and in the past year chaired the Safe Cycling subcommittee and oversaw the successful launch of the Stay Wider of the Rider campaign nationally; and served on 2 additional subcommittees. With his legal background as attorney, Lance has served the committee and the Trust well and is invaluable as a committee member on a number of topics, including assisting with the disciplinary sub-committee. MARCELA GUERRERO CASAS
Born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, Marcela Guerrero Casas is passionate about cities and public space. Marcela holds a Masters in Public Administration and International Affairs from Syracuse University and has worked in policy and advocacy for almost ten years. Marcela moved to Cape Town in 2011 and became involved with events like Moonlightmass, becoming fascinated by the possibilities this city holds to get people on bicycles as a mode of transport. In 2012, her personal interest in a safer and more enabling environment for cycling as a form of transport coupled with her professional background in advocacy and policy prompted her to start ‘Open Streets’ with a group of passionate Capetonians. The concept of “Open Streets” or “Ciclovia” has been tremendously popular and successful globally, with 400 cities creating car-free streets on a temporary basis for people to cycle and move freely. It is now a project supported by local government and will be implemented in different parts of Cape Town, hoping to bring the concept to many other cities in the belief that Open Streets can be a powerful tool to significantly increase the number of commuter cyclists in South Africa. – Robin Hunt-Davis

CHRISTONIE GELDENHUYS
Christonie has been involved with the sport of cycling for many years and is still participating competitively. He has a passion to grow cycling as a sport and as a result has been involved at both club (TrackCyclingSA) and regional (WPCA) level to promote the sport. He feels strongly about the role of cycling to improve social and personal well-being. Also, having spent many months in Europe, he understands the role the bicycle can play as part of an integrated transport strategy and would like to see such initiatives be supported in Cape Town. Lastly, he is a business man that understands the importance of strategic planning, investment and sound operational and financial management, which are all important aspects when working in a collective such as PPA. – Peter John Wheeler

ROY HANNINGTON
I feel that Roy should serve on the PPA Exco for the following reasons: He is an avid and passionate cyclist who has been riding for many years. Roy has a vast knowledge of all things cycling-related and is passionate about cycling in all its forms. Roy works for an asset management company and works with their clients on a daily basis. He has fantastic communication skills and I see this as being a huge resource to PPA. – Clyde Hayward

GALIEMA HARRIS
She has been involved in cycling development over the last 10 years, helping several clubs with on-road as well as financial support. Galiema is a true ambassador for cycling in Cape Town as she is a keen cyclist and fully aware of what is happening in the cycling arena. She has an understanding of the needs of the community and really promotes safe cycling and she is often on the road and make sure their groups do not break the road rules. This is one unbelievable person with a heart of gold, with many contacts and influence and serving on the PPA will add so much value to the PPA, taking it to new heights. – Aboobaker Harris

ANN HARRISON
My motivation to be a member of the PPA committee is to increase women’s cycling. I have been involved with women’s cycling for over 8 years, running training camps and developing skills through structured clinics. I understand women and how they think and what they want at all levels. I believe the PPA will benefit from my experience that I have gained over my cycling career especially when it comes to women’s cycling. I still compete and am passionate about mountain biking. I would love to develop the XCO skills of the youth (grades 10-12) and get the girls and their parents involved with the sport. I ride because I love it. – via Christelle Paans

STEVE HAYWARD
Steve has been a long-standing committee member of the Pedal Power Association, serving both as chairman of the Association and as a Trustee (as well as chairman) of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust. His calm head and ability to steer PPA through some turbulent times has served the Association extremely well and has assisted amongst others to resolve potential conflict between PPA and CSA. Steve started cycling in 1974 and is still passionate about cycling in all its forms – road and off-road cycling; overnight tours as well as social and untimed cycling events. Steve was instrumental in getting the Killarney training sessions started and still attends most sessions. Steve has been a stalwart amongst the PPA volunteer marshals and continues to assist in this regard. There are few who understand the PPA and what it stands for as well as Steve does. I would welcome Steve serving a further two years for the benefit of the Committee, our members, and cycling in general. – David Bellairs

DEREK KRUEGER
I have known Derek Kreuger for a few years now, having seen him perform management accounting services for one of our audit clients. Derek performed major in-depth analysis of all accounting and financial aspects during his contract with the client, leaving the (foreign) directors of the company in a strong position of control of all accounting and financial reporting structures. Together with his long-standing membership of the PPA (during which time he has completed 25 Cape Town Cycle Tours and 3 CTCT MTB Challenges), I feel that Derek is fully equipped to assist the PPA Exco to understand and appreciate his methods of analysis and presentation of the PPA’s comparative accounting and finance, so that it can achieve its objectives relating to all projects undertaken by the PPA. (I understand that Derek, on his own volition, proposed numerous automation changes to Stephen Stefano’s Order Form for the Club 21 Membership). I believe that Derek has the mind-set that the PPA is looking to in its quest for improved reporting, accountability and transparency that its Exco needs in this progressive era, which includes assisting the CEO in his newly-created role. – Niël Cilliers

GORDON LAING
Gordon is a registered Civil Engineer with a MBA and B.Com degree with immense sustainable transport, cycling and strategic planning expertise which will be of great benefit to the PPA. Gordon is a strong advocate for utility cycling – commuting in its broadest form – in a sustainable and socially responsible way. He consults on the development of Sustainable Strategies for local and provincial authorities, corporates and NGO’s. Recent clients include the World Wide Fund for Nature, the cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Tshwane and Stellenbosch, and the Brazilian Department of Transport. Gordon was a core member of the teams developing and implementing various Transport Operations Plans at national, regional and host-city level for the 2010 FIFA Soccer World CupTM. Recent cycling-related projects in which Gordon was involved, include developing Tshwane’s Non-Motorised Transport Framework (2013) and Stellenbosch’s Cycle Plan (2015). Gordon is a key member of the consortium which has recently been awarded the bid to develop the City of Cape Town’s new cycling strategy, which is a very exciting development locally and a project that would most certainly be one the PPA would be following with keen interest, as an interested party and/or participating stakeholder. Gordon serves on the board of BEN (Bicycling Empowerment Network South Africa). His understanding of and passion for the local cycling environment will bring insight into the bigger perspective of the environment PPA is functioning in such as sustainability, development, strategic interpretation and more. This understanding will assist the Committee with their decision-making process, the identification of focus areas and overall a greater understanding of cycling. Gordon has been a PPA member for many years; has completed 25 Cycle Tours and I believe he will really add value to the PPA Executive Committee. – Billy Wassermann

MOGAMAD SHARIEF PETERS
Sharief has been an ardent cyclist for the past 28 years and has completed 17 Cycle Tours. He has been in the forefront of the Cape Town Giants club, holding various positions on its Executive Committee and fulfilling his duties diligently. He has been and is still playing a pivotal role in the development of youth cycling within the Cape Town Giants. He has been responsible for and actively involved in setting up various development cycling tours under the banner of Western Province Cycling. As a former management consultant, Rens has assisted various Blue Chip clients with strategic changes and organizational development projects and has made the same skills freely available to PPA. From a content perspective, Rens has been appointed as an advisor to the Western Cape Provincial Governments Department of Transport and Public Works in certain public transport policy matters. As a keen cyclist with strong business acumen, Rens wishes to continue assisting the PPA and its membership to move forward and grow its base and influence across the country. From a cycling pedigree, Rens successfully completed his third Absa Cape Epic this year, has ridden a couple of sub-3 hour Cape Town Cycle Tours; completed a few Coronation Double Centuries as well as overseas road cycling events. Rens regularly writes cycling-related columns for Bicycling and Full Sus publications. Rens earlier this year completed a Gran Fondo road race in Italy and has a particular interest in seeing PPA’s road event offering grow. – Billy Wassermann

BEVERLEY SCHAFER
Bev is a relative new convert to cycling and will be tackling her first Coronation Double Century this year, having been on the support crew last year. As a politician in the Provincial Government, she is well-placed to assist PPA in its efforts to see Cape Town become the cycling hub of Africa. – David Bellairs

PETER JOHN WHEELER
PW stands for road riding in all its forms – commuting, road fun rides, club rides and racing. Currently PPA road fun ride calendar has all but disappeared. PW believes that the funds received from Cycle Tour should be re-invested in road cycling and will propose changes to budgets/spending to reflect this. – Rob Booth

KIRSTEN WILKINS
Kirsten is an Urban Designer and Cycling Advocate living and working in Cape Town. Her professional work in city design and passion for the bicycle has seen many intersections over the past few years. Most notably, Kirsten was invited to present her unique South African perspective on “Bicycles as a tool for Social Justice” at this year’s World Bicycle Forum in Medellin, Colombia. Kirsten is an active member of the Bicycle Cape Town team and directly involved in promoting active mobility at city scale events such as TEDxCapeTown and the ‘Cycle in the City’ series. Kirsten has contributed to a number of exciting bicycling-related advocacy projects in Cape Town, from being actively involved in the City’s Bicycle Forum shaping policy to touring the City by bike with decision-makers to change perceptions. From site visits with building contractors to teaching kids how to take care of bicycles, Kirsten’s passion for bicycle mobility is contagious and actively integrated into all her urban design projects. Her recent appointment as Urban Designer at the Cape Town Partnership has seen her elevate her ability to bring change through securing active collaborations to develop practical outworkings of the city’s Low Carbon Strategy with organisations such as Copenhagenize. Her contribution to the Pedal Power Association will be a wonderful injection of enthusiasm and knowledge in actively engaging with the diversity of bicycle riders we have in our city. Kirsten is eager to try every iteration of cycling from BMX tricks to folding bikes and mud-splattered mountainous terrain. Her ride of choice is a South African-built steel frame vintage road bike who is lovingly named “Touareg” (the desert wanderer). – Niël Cilliers
