15 Nov 2016 Newsletter 15 Nov 2016: Come cycle with us in Langebaan, Milnerton, Kenilworth, Clarens and more
DO YOU REMEMBER…
PPA was founded 40 years ago… In 1997, the 5th Double Century was held between Paarl and Worcester. That year, Willie Engelbrecht’s team took top honours, winning in 5h59 (combined time of 35h 55min, with the “No Rush” team finishing in 68h 51min). In November 2004 our newsletter, LifeCycle, looked forward to the 12th Double Century. That year, the DC took place in and around Ceres, with the event having moved there in an effort to look for quieter roads as there were concerns from authorities “… because of the traffic delays caused by an event that… affects other road users for 12 hours.” Who still remembers that dreadful climb up the aptly-named “Swaarmoed Pass”? If the climb was not bad enough, the rough road surface seemed to do its best to slow you down. Good luck to all the teams and riders getting ready for the 2016 Coronation Double Century!
ENTER NOW FOR THE TWILIGHT FAMILY MTB AT BACKSBERG
Bring your family and friends and join us on Friday 2 December at the Backsberg Wine Estate near Paarl for the Twilight Family MTB. Everyone older than 18 who pre-enters by 14h00 on 25 November will receive a free bottle of Tread Lightly wine!
The new easy 4 km route can be enjoyed by youngsters older than 5 (cycling with mom or dad). You are also most welcome to walk or jog the 4 km route. The new 15 km route is flatter and less technical than last year’s route, and will again incorporate the hugely popular water point on the neighbouring Niel Joubert Estate where ‘bubbly’, cooldrink and sweets are on offer.
The Backsberg restaurant will offer great food for sale, as well as wine and craft beer.
Please bring along any old books and magazines to support Paarl Rotary’s “Christmas Charity Book Drive”. We also invite you to bring your unwanted cycling goodies to trade/sell at a “Peddler’s Market”, and to dress up in “Something Red, Something Gold” as the best fancy dress outfits will win a prize. We really look forward to seeing you there!
COME AND PEDAL AT THE KENILWORTH RACECOURSE THIS WEDNESDAY
Join us this Wednesday 16 November at Kenilworth Racecourse for an easy off-road cycle. All ages welcome, and no entry fee. The Kenilworth Night Market (Vineyard Oval Market) will be trading, with food, beer and wine, arts and craft stalls. The short gravel route will be open to start your riding anytime from 16h30-17h30. Please make use of the Wetton Road entrance to the Racetrack. (Please note that the Conservation Area in the middle of the Racetrack is out of bounds, due to its very sensitive ecological nature.)
DIARISE THE DATE: MALUTI DOUBLE90 TEAM CHALLENGE
SAVE THE DATE: The 2017 Maluti Double90 Team Challenge will take place on Saturday 1 April 2017 in Clarens in the eastern Free State. 180 km, 120 teams, 12 riders per team, 2000m elevation: Are you tough enough? Entries will open on 28 November – watch this space!
CYCLE TOUR ‘TRAINING WHEELS’ PROGRAMME IS COMING BACK
We have good news: PPA will be running a ‘Training Wheels” programme to help first-timers prepare for the 2017 Cape Town Cycle Tour, offering some online support, as well as a few training sessions at Killarney, and basic mechanical sessions. More info to follow.
KILLARNEY TRAINING: JOIN US THIS WEEK ON SUNDAY
The Killarney track is booked for a corporate event so there’s no training today (Tuesday evening). Please join us there on Sunday to cycle from 08h30-11h30. We’re keeping an eye on the wind and will let you know on our Facebook page if Sunday’s training is cancelled. The Killarney restaurant will be open for breakfast, light meals and coffee.

The roads in the National park will be closed to traffic for the duration of the funride. Registration & Late Entries (at Langebaan Country Estate)
