Earlier this morning, cycling commuters from the Masiphumelele informal settlements were quite apprehensive when they were pulled off the road near the Sun Valley four-way intersection, but their apprehension soon turned to delight when the Pedal Power Association handed them free cycling helmets, while at the same time fitting red reflecting lights to their bicycles.

The City of Cape Town has approved a revised Traffic Calming Policy that states that the safety of people (whether walking or cycling) in residential areas is paramount and takes precedence over vehicle mobility. Pedestrians and accidents have always been considered in the assessments but are now weighted more heavily. For example, the number of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as previous occurrences of vehicle accidents on a particular street, will now lend even greater weight to the consideration of traffic calming measures.

The Western Cape Minister of Safety, Dan Plato, has released the following statement regarding safety on Table Mountain: "Following my meeting during the week with law enforcement, SANParks and the chairperson of the Table Mountain Forum I am satisfied that all parties are committed to leaving no stone unturned to increase safety on Table Mountain. "With 25 new field rangers reporting for duty with Table Mountain National Park today, SANParks has stepped up patrols in areas identified as crime hotspots on the mountain chain.
