(Cape Town, 29 August 2012) Entries for the 36th Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour – the largest individually timed cycling event in the world – open on Saturday 1 September 2012 at 12pm. The 2013 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour will take place on Sunday, 10 March 2013. Tour plans flatter route return David Bellairs, marketing and sponsorship director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust, organisers of Cycle Tour, says an exciting prospect for cyclists taking part in next year’s Cycle Tour is a strong likelihood the event will return to the flatter 109km route option via Main Road, Muizenberg.

Background Founded in 1976 as the Western Province Pedal Power Association, the PPA (a Public Benefit Organisation) came into being as a result of the running of the first Cycle Tour that was to develop into the now-world famous Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour. Over the years the Association has grown into the largest cycling body in the country, ending the 2011-2012 membership year with just over 20 000 members.

We are pleased to announce that entries for the 2012 PPA Spring League, presented in conjunction with the Western Province Cycling Association, are now open. This year’s Spring league promises to be competitive, exhilarating and action-packed with three road funrides, two circuit races and one tough hill climb making up the league.

Join us for a brand new MTB funride on Sunday 16 September! The event will be using many of the Schapenberg MTB trails that PPA sponsored in 2010, with new trails currently being developed for the event. Check out our Facebook page for pics taken this week when we did a trail inspection. (PS We've now also added a video clip of one of the sections of single track to our Facebook page - go check it out!)

Winter or not, it’s still a great time to ride our bicycles, whether it’s on the road or venturing into the mountains. However, it’s important to know where you may and may not ride, and to keep a few safety tips in mind.

The Hout Bay Cycling club celebrates its second successful year based at James House, a community NGO serving the poor of Hout Bay which provides a base for the club. By way of a thank you to Christo Reid, Director of James House, the club organised a charity ride to raise funds for James House projects. The ride was the brain child of Josh Rubenstein, a grade 12 Waldorf student and one of the club’s volunteer coaches. Josh selected four of the top riders to take part in the epic 400 km three day ride, which started from Hout Bay and averaged 133 km per day. The route took in three major passes: Helshoogte, Franschhoek and Bains Kloof and took the riders to places they had never been to before.
