“We were shocked and saddened to hear this morning that a commuter was killed yesterday after being involved in a collision with a minibus taxi on the corners of Prince George Drive and Vrygrond Avenue near Muizenberg,” said Pedal Power Association (PPA) chairman Steve Hayward. “We understand that a case of culpable homicide has been opened. We further understand that the passenger on the same bicycle was taken to Victoria Hospital for medical treatment and is currently in a stable condition.” As a protest against the incident, the PPA coordinated a silent protest on the morning of Saturday 6 April at the scene of the incident, and erected a ghost bicycle on the scene (see pics on our Facebook page). The annual PPA Wacky Wheels Overnight Tour generally takes place the weekend after the Cycle Tour. This year the group camped in Onrust, and cycled to Stanford for lunch, returning via Hermanus. The by-now-(in)fam0us Wacky Prizegiving followed in the evening, with the group pedalling out...

“We are pedalling to support PPA’s CYCLISTS STAY ALIVE AT 1.5m safety campaign,” said a peloton of eighty cyclists who started the 2013 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour today. The peloton, all wearing their distinctive 1.5m safe cycling jerseys, made a highly visible yellow-and-red splash in the start chutes this morning.

We yesterday received the tragic news that yet another cyclist was killed in Johannesburg after being hit by a car. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We need to get the message out there that CYCLISTS STAY ALIVE AT 1.5m. We therefore urge you to support the safety awareness ride on Saturday morning and to arrive en masse – bring your friends and family members, and let’s get the message out there that we will not stand for any more cyclists being hit by vehicles.
