The new PPA Tread Lightly Twilight MTB ride on Friday 13 December 2013 is something different - and should definitely not be missed. Sunday 8 December is a special day on the cycling calendar: It is a day when the focus falls solely on female cyclists, with husbands, boyfriends and partners looking after the kids while the women take to the roads. The PPA’s ‘Heels on Wheels’ funride aims to demystify cycling for the average female cyclist, creating a friendly and doable event where the emphasis is primarily on getting to the finish line – and having heaps of fun along the way. The funride will start at 06h30 at the Simonsvlei Wine Estate near Paarl. Choose from one of three routes: a tough 53 km which includes the climb over Helshoogte; an undulating 38 km or an easy and relatively flat 22 km. Great lucky draw prizes include cycling clothing, various hampers and shopping vouchers.

20 November 2013: “It was with mixed feelings that we received the new Extraordinary Provincial Gazette 7194 of the Western Cape Government, published on 20 November 2013,” said PPA Chairman Steve Hayward.  The Gazette refers to the Western Cape Province Road Traffic Administration Act 2012 (Act 6 of 2012): Safety of cyclists’ regulations 2013.

Tuesday this week is a busy one with a Killarney training session today. For the fairer sex: Entries have opened for the PPA Heels on Wheels @ Simonsvlei all-female road funride on 8 December - pre-entries only, enter now! And lastly, read more about the wonderful new  fun late-afternoon twilight ride on Friday 13 December.

Members will recall that earlier this year we posted an affidavit as to why PPA lodged a High court application against CSA.  The latest update is that we are currently in settlement discussions with CSA and the court date has been reset to 5 December...

Congratulations to everyone who braved the terrible wind on Sunday - we salute you. Some interesting stats: Of the just over 1800 entrants, 1294 (wearing transponders) arrived on the day, with 1260 riders making it to the checkpoint just outside Malmesbury. Of these, 1115 completed...

Too many cyclists have died in the past year after being hit by a car, bus or taxi. Amongst them were Olympic cyclist Burry Stander, as well as numerous commuters and other cyclists. In the draft National Non-Motorised Transport Policy of 2008, South Africa’s National Department of Transport committed to getting more people to ride bicycles. Based on feedback from our members, one of the main reasons why more people do not ride bicycles on roads is because they are afraid of being injured or killed by a motorised vehicle. It’s as simple as that.
