Depending on where and when you ride and your vulnerability, you may be exposed to some risk of assault or robbery while cycling, as was the case earlier this week with a cyclist in Kwazulu-Natal, as well as local cyclists who were attacked near Stellenbosch. The risk is often low but the impact on many people of an assault, robbery or other attack is massive. It can significantly reduce how much you use your bike and the stress-free enjoyment of riding when you do. Consequently, it is worth trying to minimise the risk of assault before it ever happens to you. 

Membership fees are annually due as of 1 July, with PPA's membership year running from 1 July to 30 June. With the Cycle Tour 2015 entries opening on 8 September, we strongly urge you to pay your entries well before then so as to streamline the Cycle Tour entry process.

The fourth Oudtshoorn Youth Cycling Festival, organised by the Southern Cape Cycling Association, took place from Monday 30 June to Thursday 3 July and included provincial teams from Western Province, Eden (SWD), Boland, Free State and the Northern Cape. The Pedal Power Association, who supports sports development and upliftment in a safe environment, donated R15 000 towards the event to boost youth participation in cycling.

Parents can teach their children to be safe cyclists by going out with them and leading by example. South African roads are public spaces and cyclists have the right to ride their bicycles on them but riding a bike on public roads is a huge responsibility and it is vital that children are made aware of the rules of the road as well as how to handle a bicycle in a safe and responsible way.
