WHAT IS THE PPA ‘STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER’ CAMPAIGN?

The Pedal Power Association has for 40 years been promoting making our roads safer for cyclists. As the safety of all our cyclists, from commuters to sports cyclists, is top of mind, PPA annually pours millions into a safe cycling campaign to educate road users about the vulnerability of cyclists on the roads. The PPA’s objective is to educate all road users to be tolerant, respectful and courteous towards each other on the road.

The Association promote the slogans ‘Please Share the Road’ and ‘Stay Wider of the Rider’ throughout South Africa. Anecdotal evidence is that motorists are currently giving cyclists a wider berth, but there are still so many people who need to be educated on how vulnerable cyclists really are on our roads.

Statistics show 84% of cycling accidents are caused by vehicles connecting cyclists from behind at speed; vehicles not passing cyclists at a safe distance; or cyclists not being visible.

The PPA launched the very successful ‘Cyclists Stay Alive at 1.5’ campaign back in 2011 which resulted in a law promulgated in 2013 in the Western Cape which states that motorists must pass cyclists with a passing distance of (at least) 1m. Through the STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER campaign, PPA urges motorists to obey the law and pass cyclists at a safe distance of at least 1 metre or more.

Join thousands of supporters throughout South Africa and pledge your support for the PPA Safe Cycling campaign by riding in a PPA STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER jersey at the 2016 Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge.
