Invitation to apply for Stay Wider of the Rider start group

Invitation to apply for Stay Wider of the Rider start group

Dear member

You are invited to apply to ride in the PPA Safe Cycling STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER start group at the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

https://online.entries.co.za/entries/jointeam.aspx?eid=4535&group=363c2540-7d56-4d34-aa1a-d9f73f892fea

Show your support for safe cycling in South Africa by riding the Cycle Tour in a STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER jersey. Our brand new design, which launched last year will ONLY be available at the  Lifestyle Expo. Please note we are unable to keep/reserve jerseys for collection at the expo. Riders can also cycle in the older ‘lumo’  STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER jerseys or gilet.

WHAT IS THE ‘STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER’ CAMPAIGN ABOUT?
Visibility is a key contributing factor to cycling accidents. More than 90% of incidents happen when drivers hit cyclists from behind, with the drivers claiming that they never saw the cyclists. PPA’s “Stay Wider of the Rider” cycling jerseys are made from a high-visibility lumo-yellow fabric that stands out during the day and has additional reflective strips worked into the pattern.

When driving as opposed to riding a bicycle, “Stay Wider of the Rider”  means passing cyclists at a distance of a metre or more which, incidentally, has been law in the Western Cape since 2013 and we are working hard to get the law passed nationally. We urge all motorists to give cyclists a wide berth of at least one metre when passing.

We also want you as a cyclist to be an example to other road users- whether you are in a car or on a bicycle- by sharing the road and being respectful towards other road users we can uplift the image of cyclists.

VISIT US AT THE EXPO FOR JERSEYS
We would like to invite you to visit the PPA stand at the Cape Town Cycle Tour Lifestyle Expo. You will be able to buy our new jerseys (two options) here. Please note these jerseys can’t be pre-ordered.

Short Sleeve new versions: R400
Long Sleeve old version:     R390
Gilet (sleeveless windbreaker): R400 old version and R450 new version

HOW DO YOU GET INTO ONE OF THE SAFE CYCLING START GROUP?
PPA has been allocated 600 spots for the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour starting at 7h56- Group 4B. Please note that seeding parameters apply. Applications for the start group will be done online only and will close Wednesday 13 February at 17h00. Click on the ENTER button at the top and complete the entry.

So how do you get accepted into our start group?
1. You must already be successfully entered into the 2019 Cape Town Cycle Tour.
2. You agree to ride the entire Cycle Tour in the current ‘STAY WIDER OF THE RIDER’ cycling jersey.

If you are accepted and seeded into the start group, you will not receive an individual Cycle Tour seeding/number as well. Please note that we can unfortunately not guarantee that you will be accepted into a Safe Cycling start group as spaces are limited.

There is no cost associated with this application. Selection will be done via a lucky draw system. We do give upcountry members a fair chance to ride in the group.

All cyclists who had entered the Cycle Tour will be notified by the Cycle Tour via email as to their seeding for the event. If your application to be reseeded into the PPA Stay Wider of the Rider start group is NOT successful, you will remain seeded in your original Cycle Tour start group.
*Seeding parameters will be applied to the start group.

Yours in cycling
The PPA Team
