PPA One Tonner

We are thrilled to announce the much-anticipated return of the PPA One Tonner back to the picturesque Nelson Wine Estate located in Windmeul, Paarl. Participants and spectators can mark their calendars for Sunday, 5 November 2023, when this memorable event will take place. There will be three distances on offer; 60 km; 105 km and 170 km to cater for all fitness levels, a perfect day for the entire family.

The PPA One Tonner has established itself as a sought-after event among cycling enthusiasts, drawing participants from near and far. The decision to return to Nelson Wine Estate, signifies a homecoming for the event, creating a memorable experience in a stunning setting.

The PPA One Tonner, is one of only two events on the PPA calendar that offer a route longer than 120 km. The PPA One Tonner offers the perfect opportunity for your entire DC team to have a final practice run prior to the Old Mutual Wealth Double Century which takes place in November.

We will offer an information tent to assist riders with any last-minute questions as well as a bike shop for minor bike adjustments and last-minute spares anyone may need. There will be a variety of vendors offering coffee for your caffeine fix as well food, beer, cooldrinks, and more! There will be a bike park to ensure more room around the venue for everyone. So come sit back, relax, and enjoy the moment with friends and family.

Your entry fee includes: timing, finishers medal, a beautiful on route experience, fully stocked water points, post-race village, lucky draw with great prizes to be won. Prize money will be awarded to all distance winners with men and women receiving equal prize money up to R30 000.

The two long routes of 105 km and 170 km are both official premier seeding events for the 2024 Cape Town Cycle Tour.

PRIZE GIVING: The top three men and women across the line prize giving will take place at the venue as soon as the results have been signed-off by the commissaires. We expect this to be between 12h00-13h00 and will announce the actual time at least 30 minutes prior to the prize-giving taking place.

LUCKY DRAW: At 14h00

CUT OFF AT THE FINISH: At 16h00

Please note if you are not a PPA Member or a CSA license holder you will be required to take out a CSA Day License.

START TIMES:

105 km – 06h00

Please note that the 105 km will start first followed by the 170 km, this is due to the merge points on route and the safety of all riders when the distances merge together.

START GROUPS: You will be divided into groups depending on your seeding. Your start group and start time will be sent via sms and email by Wednesday, 1 November.

ROUTE INFORMATION:

60km Route

In the spirit of inclusivity and encouraging new riders, the event will also feature a 60 km route tailored for younger and novice cyclists. This accessible route ensures a safe and enjoyable experience, catering to those who are new to the sport or prefer a shorter distance. A short loop in the Winelands, perfect for beginners with no big climbs. Riders will head out on the R44 and turn right onto R312 followed by another right onto R304. At Slent Road riders will turn right, and again right into Paardeberg Road. A final left turn onto the R44 will see riders on the home stretch to the finish with 1.5 km to go.

No u/15 boys or u/17 girls on the 60 km route as per CSA regulations.

You will have 2 waterpoints to keep you going!

Waterpoint 1 at 25 km with Coke, water, sweets and fruit There will be a toilet at this waterpoint.

Waterpoint 2 at 47 km with Coke, water and fruit.

105 km Route

For those looking for a slightly shorter but equally rewarding adventure, the 105 km route featuring the iconic Helshoogte pass, provides a captivating blend of rural and urban scenery, offering participants a memorable journey. Riders will head out on the R44, past Klapmuts towards Stellenbosch. where riders will turn left onto Helshoogte Road, This is where riders will have their one testing climb of the route, the iconic Helshoogte Pass. Thereafter you make your way right onto R45 another left at Wemmershoek onto the R301 until another right turn puts riders onto Lustigan Road around Paarl and back out onto Piet Retief Street and head towards Wellington, left onto Champagne street and a final loop towards Paarl onto Malmesbury Road, Noord Agter Paarl Road, Paardeberg until your final turn right onto R44 will see riders on the home stretch to the finish with 1 km to go.

No u/17 boys or u/18 girls on the 105 km route as per CSA regulations.

You will have 4 waterpoints to keep you going! All waterpoints will have toilets.

Waterpoint 1 will be at 20km with Powerade and water.

Waterpoint 2 will be at 40km with Coke, water, sweets and fruit.

Waterpoint 3 will be at 65km with Coke, water, sweets and fruit.

Waterpoint 4 will be at 90km with Coke, water and fruit. Cut off at waterpoint 4 is at 12h00

170 km Route

The 170 km route which includes the renowned Helshoogte and Bothmaskloof passes, offers breathtaking views and demanding climbs, making it a favorite among experienced cyclists seeking a true test of endurance and those that would like to get in their last training and test their fitness levels, before the Old Mutual Wealth Double Century and test their fitness levels. The 170 km route is a tough ride that includes two challenging climbs. Riders will head out on the R44, past Klapmuts towards Stellenbosch, where riders will turn left onto Helshoogte Road, This is where riders will have their first testing climb of the route, the iconic Helshoogte Pass. Thereafter you make your way right onto R45 another left at Wemmershoek onto the R301 until another right turn puts riders onto Lustigan Road around Paarl and back out onto Piet Retief Street and head towards Wellington, left onto Champagne street and right onto Distillery Road towards Hermon and then Riebeek Kasteel where you will embark on your second and final big climb of the day over Bothmaskloof. Riders will then take a left onto R45 back towards Paarl before taking a final loop right into Voorpaardeberg Road, left into Paardeberg Road and then your final turn right onto R44 will see riders on the home stretch to the finish with 1 km to go.
