Chairman’s report

Chairman’s report

The 2015-2016 membership year has been an exciting one; one that gives me great hope for the future of cycling.

Our Executive Committee has, in the past year, spent many hours analysing the current status quo; and debating the way forward. PPA’s approach to cycling will in future be an integrated one, linking Sport cycling, Cycling development, Utility cycling and Recreational cycling.

With the appointment of our CEO, Robert, the Executive Committee’s role has changed over the last year to finally become a far more strategic one, focusing on the way forward while leaving all operational issues to our very capable Office.

More than 50% of our monthly Executive committee meetings are now spent on discussing questions like “What is PPA’s mandate as an organisation and what are the parameters of the mandate?” or “How can we maximize the value proposition for members?” These discussions will continue to feature high on the agenda for the incoming committee. We are cognizant of the fact that PPA must remain relevant and be able to answer what have we done for our members, but also what have we done for cycling as such.

The other day someone asked for a copy of one of PPA’s original constitutions. We are proud to say that not much has changed over the years:

  • We still aim to be a representative body for the furtherance of the interests of cyclists.
  • We still aim to promote cycling as a recreational activity, a sport and as a means of transportation.
  • We still aim to improve conditions for cyclists with particular regard to their safety.
  • We still arrange and organise cycle tours, fun rides and outings, and assist other bodies to do the same.
  • We still establish contact and liaise with other organisations with similar interests and objectives.

Our mandate is the furtherance of cycling. To promote cycling and the interests of cyclists. Getting more people onto bicycles.

Please read the various AGM reports for feedback on what we have achieved in this regard, and what we hope to achieve in the months and years to come, in particular the CEO report, Commuting/Utility cycling report, Events report, Project funding report and Safe Cycling report.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US

PPA was founded 40 years ago in 1976, and next year the Cycle Tour is 40 years old. We are planning a special commemorative edition of LifeCycle magazine, and other initiatives to celebrate this milestone. Watch this space!

THANK YOU

To the Executive committee members whose terms now come to an end: John, Billy, Robin, Gary, Riaan and Liezel – thank you for your input and guidance over the last two years. Our treasurer, John, and convenor of our commuting portfolio, Billy, have indicated that they are willing to serve again. To Robin, Gary, Riaan and Liezel – enjoy the rest! We have received eight nominations for six vacancies, so will go to vote a little later. Please remember that only paid-up members may vote.

Robert joined us in August 2015. A year ago, we reported that he has, amongst others, been tasked to increase membership benefits. These are listed on the “Members’ Benefits”’ page on our website. At last count, there were some 17 more benefits than there were a year ago, with new ones being added on a monthly basis. Robert has also brought onboard several sponsors, and has been engaging with local and international role players and advocacy groups. I am sure you agree that his monthly letter “From the CEO’s desk” is assisting you to keep informed of what PPA is up to. Well done Robert, and keep it up.

To the rest of the team at the Office: We are extremely proud of you. This past year was a tough one, with new events like the Maluti Double90 which has been praised by upcountry riders and now stands as another great event staged by PPA; the hill climbs and Killarney sessions; a new overnight tour; social rides; bib and helmet hand-outs; chocolate hand-outs; and more. We know that you were very busy, and appreciate your continued passion for cycling and PPA. A big thank you also to our events crew, as well as our loyal cycling marshals.

The final thank you is to you, our members. Without you there will be no PPA. I thank you for your support and attendance at PPA events over the past year, and look forward to growing cycling in the years to come.
