Entries for the 2013 Coronation Double Century opened on Thursday, 25 July, with all the available team spots already taken.  The 202km event, which starts and finishes in the historic town of Swellendam, is a challenging team cycling event renowned for its camaraderie. Celebrating its 21st birthday this year, the Coronation DC takes place on Saturday, 23 November 2013.

There are only two entries left for Stage 1 of the PPA Toyota Ride for Your Life SA Tour. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to get fit, see South Africa and at the same time raise awareness for cyclists’ safety.

The present discussions around whether or not all participants in the Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycletour should register with CSA has prompted me think back to the very first event when we wrestled with this very same issue. My memory may well be a bit rusty, but fortunately I still have copies of the monthly newsletters from those days to draw on. (There’s much more to be said and I must get on with the book I’ve been meaning to write . . .) - By John Stegmann

The first weekend of June was a bleak one for cycling, with four cyclists being knocked down in Cape Town alone, in two separate incidents. PPA says: Enough is enough! In order to raise awareness around the safety of cyclists, PPA is organising the RIDE FOR YOUR LIFE SOUTH AFRICA TOUR from 8 to 28 September – and you are invited to participate.

PPA has responded as detailed below to the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works on the draft legislation pertaining to cycle safety. We encourage our members to also write to Mr Watters to express your opinion, as it does make a difference if many people write in. Public comments are accepted until 24 May 2013.

In April, Transport and Public Works MEC Robin Carlisle proposed draft legislation of a 1m passing distance between motorists and cyclists, although prior proposals referred to a 1.5m passing distance. Under the new  law, motorists will be required to exercise due care when passing the cyclist, leave a distance between the vehicle and the cyclist of at least one metre and to only pass the cyclist if the road allows. But is this enough?

Entries for the PPA "Tread Lightly" Women's MTB on Saturday 18 May 2012 at Backsberg Estate Cellars have closed. With just under 800 ladies entered, this is the biggest all-female event in the country and set to be an amazing event! Specific event information and details has been emailed to all entrants.
