Too many cyclists have died on our roads, and we need YOU to help make a difference and raise awareness for safe passing distances and safer roads for all.  The Pedal Power Association and Toyota are proud to invite you to the launch of the PPA Ride for Your Life SA Tour in Johannesburg on Sunday 8 September 2013.

PPA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2013 Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Pedal Power Association will be held on Monday 02 September 2013, at 18:00 for 18h30 at the Canal Walk Auditorium, Canal Walk Shopping Centre.

In February 2012, CSA wrote PPA out of its constitution despite PPA being granted entrenched rights in perpetuity in CSA’s founding constitution of 2004; PPA having been a primary motivator for unification prior to 2004.

Entries for the 2013 Coronation Double Century opened on Thursday, 25 July, with all the available team spots already taken.  The 202km event, which starts and finishes in the historic town of Swellendam, is a challenging team cycling event renowned for its camaraderie. Celebrating its 21st birthday this year, the Coronation DC takes place on Saturday, 23 November 2013.

There are only two entries left for Stage 1 of the PPA Toyota Ride for Your Life SA Tour. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to get fit, see South Africa and at the same time raise awareness for cyclists’ safety.

The present discussions around whether or not all participants in the Pick n Pay Cape Argus Cycletour should register with CSA has prompted me think back to the very first event when we wrestled with this very same issue. My memory may well be a bit rusty, but fortunately I still have copies of the monthly newsletters from those days to draw on. PPA has responded as detailed below to the Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works on the draft legislation pertaining to cycle safety. We encourage our members to also write to Mr Watters to express your opinion, as it does make a difference if many people write in. Public comments are accepted until 24 May 2013.

In April, Transport and Public Works MEC Robin Carlisle proposed draft legislation of a 1m passing distance between motorists and cyclists, although prior proposals referred to a 1.5m passing distance. Under the new  law, motorists will be required to exercise due care when passing the cyclist, leave a distance between the vehicle and the cyclist of at least one metre and to only pass the cyclist if the road allows. But is this enough?

Spring is only a few months away and the good news is that we are proposing some exciting changes for the season ahead. In recent months, several riders have asked us to consider seeded category racing instead of age category racing. Your wish is our command… but what does seeded category racing mean? In seeded-category racing, all cyclists of similar ability will race together in one start group, irrespective of age i.e. whether you are an elite, sub-vet, vet, master or grandmaster. The exception is u/16 riders, who’ll ride in their own category irrespective of seeding.

A reminder that Chapmans Peak currently closes from 08h00-16h00 on Wednesdays, to allow for alien vegetation clearing. If you plan to cycle in that area, either do so outside these hours, or choose a different route....
