MOTIVATIONS SUPPLIED: IF YOU WERE ELECTED TO THE COMMITTEE, WHAT WOULD YOU FOCUS ON IN YOUR 2 YEARS?
RODNEY BECK
Having served on the Executive Committee for the past two years, Rodney would like to continue to encourage mass participation at events, reduced event entry fees for PPA members and create cycling awareness in general. Rodney is a former Chairman of the Outriders Cycling Club. He would like to increase the cycling experience for the average rider.
JOHN GALE
John is a keen road and mountain cyclist that has completed more than 10 Cape Town Cycle Tours and 13 Cape Epics amongst numerous other races. He is a Chartered Accountant (SA) with 20 years’ experience working in commerce and industry in an SME and entrepreneurial environment. Having served as Treasurer since November 2015, John is able to identify areas where he can add value to the reporting, planning and financial management of the organisation. His focus would be to facilitate the financial reporting and associated management systems to enable meaningful and effective decisions regarding the organisation’s strategic implementation of its key mandate, which is to promote cycling.
ABBAS HARRIS
Abbas has served on the Executive Committee for two years and a few initiatives he has undertaken include promoting a cycle path on Baden Powell Drive between Strandfontein and Muizenberg, promoting cycling safety at Rondebosch Common as well as his involvement with the development of youth riders. As chairperson of Active Bodies Sports Development, Abbas is also a coach and a catalyst that takes 40-50 children to participate in the Cape Town Cycle Tour every year. They provide kit, bicycles and training to kids that show a keen interest in riding the Cycle Tour. Abbas fulfils a role of a community leader and wants to encourage more cyclists to assist within the cycling fraternity. He believes that he can enable alternative sources of revenue for the organisation.
GALIEMA HARRIS
Galiema has also served on the Executive Committee for two years and would like to concentrate more on safe cycling and getting women interested in cycling. She intends on increasing the number of emerging entrants of women into cycling from a vast background using various NPO’s and Cycling Teams. She has local as well as global links to fundraising to enable short and long-term visions without or with minimal PPA funding. She is easy to get along with and is a person of value, integrity, sportsmanship, fairness, logic and understanding without compromises and unilateral decision-making.
7. TREASURER’S REPORT
Sharief has been involved in cycling for the past 26 years and has been a member of the Executive Committee for the past two years. He would like the opportunity to continue his drive to introduce cycling to everyone. Sharief believes that the PPA has allowed him a better understanding of what is needed to grow cycling as a sport.
ALEXIS SCHOLTZ-WHEELER
Alexis’ key focus would be to build on the success of the PPA’s programs based upon their strategy and goals in order to increase impact at scale. Part of her work at the World Wide Fund for Nature is advocating for increased eco-mobility or low carbon transport with a focus on non- motorised transport. She can contribute to the organisational goals of promoting the uptake of cycling through research and contacts in the transport space. Alexis has a great interest in poverty and inequality and has considerable knowledge of that space and would like to contribute to the development of cycling as a recreational sport in disadvantaged communities. Alexis is a communications specialist that could lend experience and focus to increase advocacy and communications.
FRANK VAN ASPEREN
Frank believes he can offer strategic marketing and sales advice to improve the existing revenue streams of the organisation. He can offer advice on the creation of new breakthrough events as well as new income streams. He is able to support and build the PPA image as well as collaborations with sponsors. Frank has 20 years of General Manager and Commercial Directors experience. He has access to a huge network in the SA beverage industry and believes his skills will benefit the organisation. Frank is a cycling fanatic, so his heart is 100% in this. He is used to working in teams to achieve optimal solutions and would bring this skill to the PPA Executive Commitee as well.
