2012 Project funding applications now open

Do you need funds for a worthwhile cycling project? The Pedal Power Association (PPA) is putting money back into cycling, making profits obtained via the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour available for the funding of cycling projects for 2012.

Your project could be big or small, new or already in existence, in the Western Cape or elsewhere in South Africa.

WHAT KIND OF PROJECTS?

The PPA will consider project applications in the following portfolios:

  • Cycling development and schools cycling
  • Commuting cycling
  • Cycling projects assisting previously disadvantaged communities
  • Cycling safety
  • Women’s cycling
  • Off-road cycling
  • Cycling trails and/or cycle paths

Overheads for a project which will not be funded for by PPA :

  • Administration costs
  • Salaries
  • Transport costs to events
  • Supplements/ food/ nutrition
  • Cycling shoes/ clothing
  • Storage facilities

BACKGROUND

PPA is a public benefit organisation that was established in 1976. It is the largest cycling organization in South Africa and currently has some 18 000 paid-up members throughout the country, although the largest component is in the Western Cape, where the Association has its offices.

The main purpose and object of the Association is to promote cycling and the interests of cyclists. Without limiting the generality of the aforegoing, the Association has the following ancillary objectives:

a)    “to promote cycling as a recreational activity, a sport and/or as a means of transportation;

(b)    to improve conditions for cyclists, with particular regard to their safety;

(c)    to arrange and organise cycle tours, fun rides and outings;

(d) to co-ordinate cycle tours, fun rides and outings.”

Applications must reach the PPA office by 12h00 on or before Monday 26th March 2012. Evaluation of applications will take place and a shortlist of applicants complied by mid April 2012. These applicants will be notified to submit company documentation by 26 April 2012, and successful allocations announced by end May 2012. Funding will become available from July 2012. Project funding allocations need to be taken up within four months, or the funds will be re-allocated to other projects.
