17 October 2011

This week in the news:

  • Bike to Work Day: Wed 19 Oct
  • Enter now for new women’s-only funride!
  • Killarney training on Tuesday
  • Forthcoming events
  • This weekend on the PPA funride calendar

Congratulations to all participants who completed the PPA One Tonner on Sunday. What a great event it was – we appreciate all the notes of ‘thanks’ we are still receiving. This year we had over 1300 entrants; many of whom will be doing the Coronation Double Century in November. Enjoy your recovery from the One Tonner and the last bit of training before the DC – we hope to see you back at the One Tonner start line next year.

BIKE TO WORK: WED 19 OCT
Worried about the new higher fuel price? Want to try something ‘green’, and at the same time get a bit of exercise for the day? Mobilize your family and friends and cycle to work on Wednesday 19 October. Using a bicycle to get to work is much easier than you think, and it may just inspire you to become a regular commuter! Afterwards, please send us your feedback (include a pic of yourself commuting?) to commuting@pedalpower.org.za. and tell us how it went. See the PPA website home page for more information.

NEW WOMEN’S-ONLY ROAD FUNRIDE!
Join us on 11 December 2011 for the PPA “Heels on Wheels”, presented by SHAPE magazine. This all-female event is specially designed to cater for newcomers to cycling and cyclists who perhaps don’t participate in funrides as often as they’d like. Choose from a 47km and 13km route. Goody bags to the first 350 entrants, and great lucky draw prizes.

Click here to see full event info and to enter online.

KILLARNEY TRAINING
PPA’s cycle training sessions take place at the Killarney Motor Racing track near Milnerton on Tuesdays. Registration starts at 17h30 in the pits area, with the session commencing at 18h00. Entry fees are R15.00 per PPA member, R30.00 per non-member and R5.00 for children u/12, riding with a parent. Read more in the news section on the PPA website.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION
The MTB route goes over nine farms, with the starting venue being only 5 km outside Durbanville. All routes offer scenic views of the Boland mountains and Durbanville farmlands.

The 60 km route consists of a variety of farm roads, jeep tracks and single-tracks. This year it will not only include the well-known Rondebossieberg and Meerendal climbs, but we have included some of the fantastic single-tracks on Meerendal as well. Remember to look at the majestic views of the entire Cape Peninsula from the top before you hold your breath going down the famous “Godzilla” descent.

The 30 km route follows the first part of the long route and will include Rondebossieberg with more moderate climbs, downhills and farm roads. The 10 km route is aimed at kids and beginners and is a flat, easy ride.

DIRECTIONS TO VENUE
From the N1, take Exit 23 onto the R302 (Willie van Schoor/Durban Rd) towards Durbanville. Follow this road for 6.7 km until the traffic circle at Durbanville High School. Turn right onto the M58 (Koeberg Rd) towards Philadelphia. Follow this road for 5,4 km and turn right onto the Spes Bona (gravel) road for 3.1 km. The road then makes a 90-degree turn to your left. After the turn, keep going straight for another 1.8 km until you reach Rondebossieberg farm. GPS Coordinates: S 33°45’40; E 18°40’18. See the PPA website for interactive directions.

NOTES
All children u/10 must be accompanied by an adult. PPA members wearing their brown seeded MTB numbers will start before Non-PPA members or PPA members who had forgotten their seeded numbers at home.  All profits are in aid of Carel Du Toit Centre for children with hearing impairments and speech difficulties, as well as the community schools in the Durbanville region.

Pre-registration and entries at Chris Willemse Cycles, Willowbridge: Wednesday 19 October – Friday 21 October from 11h30 – 18h00 daily.  Late entries also available on the morning of the event at the venue.

For detailed route descriptions and further event information, visit www.faircape.com.  Route profiles available on www.pointbreak.co.za.

Remember to wear your PPA MTB funride number. Contact the PPA Office by Thursday if you have not received a permanent MTB number and need one for this event.
