17 Jul 2019 MEMORIAL/PROTEST RIDE GAUTENG SUNDAY 28 JULY
The Pedal Power Association (PPA), SA’s largest cycling organisation, is calling on cyclists in Gauteng to join our memorial/protest ride arranged for Sunday 28 July starting from the Terrazzo Shopping Centre in Florida Glen at 7h00 to the scene of the fatal accident of Dr Willie Fourie along Ontdekkers Road. We are hoping to hand over a letter with grievances to MEC Transport City of Joburg at the spot where Dr Fourie died.
We hear of minor incidents and close calls from cyclists along this very busy road on a daily basis and decided to host a memorial ride combined with a protest ride in conjunction with the New Horizons Cycle Club with the focal point being the plight of all cyclists be it recreational or commuting, for safer conditions on the roads in Gauteng.
The safety of cyclists on our roads is of utmost importance to the PPA. Since 2011, the organisation has invested millions in various safe cycling campaigns to secure safer roads and awareness for cyclists, and to advocate mutual tolerance and respect amongst road users.
The memorial/protest ride will start at 07h00 from the parking area at the Terrazza Shopping Centre, Florida Glen. We will offer riders a cup of coffee before the start so head out slightly earlier.Route https://www.strava.com/routes/19882990
It is a relatively easy 20 km route. PLEASE NOTE : This is not a race it is an Awareness ride so we are asking the group to stay together, please let’s follow the rules of the road and remember why we are doing this ride.
*There will be marshals, ride captains and emergency services as well as a back- up vehicle on the day. No one will be left behind.
Bring your friends and let’s cycle for safer roads !
